Neill Blomkamp’s AI Short Film ‘Nightborne’ Sparks Debate on Generative Cinema

Neill Blomkamp, known for directing District 9 and Gran Turismo, has unveiled his latest project: a 13-minute sci-fi short titled Nightborne. Loosely based on Peter Watts’ 2014 novel Echopraxia, the film comes from Blomkamp’s new AI startup, Barley Studios. While the characters’ voices and faces are modeled after human actors, every shot was generated using ByteDance’s Seedance 2.0 text-to-video AI. In a post on X, Blomkamp called it a “test start” to showcase generative AI’s capabilities and expressed interest in tackling a full feature film using similar technology. The release has sparked debate among filmmakers and tech enthusiasts about the role of AI in creative industries.
